چکیده

The n3 and n4 vibrational transitions of methane trapped in solid parahydrogen have been observed by using Fourier transform infrared and high resolution laser spectroscopy. The observed spectrum is interpreted in terms of rovibrational states of the spherical rotor which are subjected to the crystal field splitting. The n4 band shows extremely sharp lines of a width of ;0.003 cm , while the n3 band exhibits broader lines of a width of 1 cm. The infrared selection rules derived from an extended group theory to take into account the field effect are consistent with the observed spectra. The intermolecular interaction and the field effect in solid parahydrogen are analyzed quantitatively. © 1997 American Institute of Physics. @S0021-9606~97!04743-0#

Rovibrational states of a tetrahedral molecule in a hexagonal close-packed crystal

The vibration-rotation states of a tetrahedral molecule in a field of D3h symmetry are studied by an extended group theory. Symmetry adapted rotational wave functions for the ground and the triply degenerate excited vibrational states are constructed. The crystal field potential is derived explicitly for a tetrahedral molecule in a hexagonal close-packed crystal. As an example, the rovibrationa...

High-resolution spectroscopy and the analysis of ro-vibrational transitions of molecules in solid parahydrogen

Solid parahydrogen provides a novel matrix for isolation spectroscopy of atoms and molecules. Ro-vibrational motion of molecules embedded in solid parahydrogen is well quantized on account of the weak interactions in the crystal and of the softness of the crystal being characteristic of quantum crystals. Most of the observed spectral linewidths are one or two orders of magnitude sharper than th...

Tunneling chemical reactions in solid parahydrogen: direct measurement of the rate constants of R + H2 --> RH + H (R = CD3,CD2H,CDH2,CH3) at 5 K.

Tunneling chemical reactions between deuterated methyl radicals and the hydrogen molecule in a parahydrogen crystal have been studied by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The tunneling rates of the reactions R + H2 --> RH + H (R = CD3,CD2H,CDH2) in the vibrational ground state were determined directly from the temporal change in the intensity of the rovibrational absorption bands of the ...

A remeasurement of the 2 : 4 l m spectrum of J 1⁄4 1 H 2 pairs in a parahydrogen crystal q

The solid parahydrogen crystal has proven to be an extraordinary matrix medium. The very weak intermolecular interaction with relatively high-zero-point lattice vibration in combination with the small mass of the molecule lead to a highly quantum system in which hydrogen molecules rapidly tunnel between equivalent sites. This tunnelling process is the basis for a powerful self-annealing behavio...

Laser spectroscopic studies of the pure rotational &,(O) and l&(O) transitions of solid parahydrogen

High resolution spectrum of multipole-induced transitions of solid parahydrogen was recorded using diode and difference frequency laser spectroscopy. The J = 4 + 0 pure rotational UO( 0) transition observed in the diode spectrum agrees well in frequency with the value reported by Balasubramanian et al. [ Phys. Rev. Lett. 47, 1277 ( 1981) ] but we observed a spectral width smaller by about a fac...
